Joshua Schachter, 47, an entrepreneur and angel investor living in Los Altos, Calif., on his 1962 Lotus Type 23, as told to A.J. Baime.

I’ve been club racing for a while in a Spec Miata [a Mazda model converted for racing] and I wanted to try historic racing. Right around the time I was thinking about what kind of car to get, four years ago, a friend of a friend decided to sell this Lotus 23. I thought of it as a beautiful piece of history with a great engineering story, and it was substantially less expensive than a vintage Ferrari or Porsche of its era. What I paid for this vehicle won’t even get you in the nicest Tesla.
