Ministers are trying to lure Rivian to build a £1billion factory in the UK.

Officials have held talks with the electric truck maker this week and are offering a package including a junction on the M5 motorway, training facilities and a train link to woo Rivian into choosing the hitech Gravity business centre near Bristol for its first European hub.

The UK is thought to face competition from Serbia and at least one other European country.

Winning the deal would be a major coup for the manufacturing industry and comes after Nissan’s announcement earlier this week that it will place its plant in Sunderland at the centre of a £13billion drive to develop electric vehicles.

Rivian went public in a £48billion Wall Street float last month and is the world’s sixth-largest car maker – despite having a backlog of more than 55,000 orders it is planning to clear by the end of 2023.
