A ‘RIDDLE’ spotted on Google Maps is confusing people on social media as they try and work out what it means.

The Google Maps image of a man writing in the sand in Cape Verde has been posted on a popular Reddit thread.

The Reddit page is described as: “A subreddit for anything and everything to do with Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google Street View.”

User u/onelyjo recently posted the riddle image to the thread and wrote: “Went to Cape Verde and saw this man writing in the sand, anyone know what it says?.”

The image appears to have been taken on Tarrafal Beach in Cape Verde, Africa.

One Reddit user replied to the image and guessed the text was written in Portuguese.

Another said: “That’s not portuguese, that’s capeverdean creole, it’s based on Portuguese but they are not mutually intelligible.”

However, another user pointed the way to a Reddit thread from last year which discusses the ‘riddle’ in more detail.

The older Reddit post shows a zoomed out version of the image.

It was posted by user u/mbsob who stated: “I was playing around on Google Earth and found this picture on a Cabo Verde beach. What is he writing?”

More Reddit users had replied to this thread with potential explanations.

One claimed: “A little bit of context. Bana was a very popular cape-verdean singer. The writings doesn’t make a lot of sense, and it seems to me that the person there has mental health problems. So, it says, line by line:

“Bana I miss you
Come read! Just
Ball! Who?
Did you sang? Only!
Bongo(?)? Not only!
Bana and the seas
Bana! Just come back (?)
Bana! Tear up…”

However, other people have disagreed with this translation so the mystery still continues.
