APEROL and Pimms have been beaten by supermarket own-brand copycats in a blind taste test conducted by Which?.

The discounter’s Aperini Aperitif and Austin’s Classic Summer Punch both beat the original versions in taste, as well as on price, in the blind test.

It means families looking for a tipple in the 23C heat this weekend can save money – AND get a tastier drink. 

Which? asked a panel of 100 Brits to rate the flavour, “mouthfeel”, appearance and smell of Pimm’s and Aperol – both £15 for 700ml – along with two supermarket versions of each. 

In the the head-to-head taste test, Which? pitted Aperol against two supermarket aperitifs from Aldi and Sainsbury’s.

Aldi, the cheapest of the bunch, came out on top with a score of 74%, compared to the real deal, which scored 72%.

What were the results of the blind taste test?

Pimms

  • Aldi Austin’s Summer Punch – Score: 72%, Price: £7.49
  • Tesco Summer Cup – Score: 69%, Price: £8
  • Pimm’s No. 1 – Score: 67%, Price: £15

Aperol

  • Aldi Aperini – Score: 74%, Price: £6.99
  • Aperol – Score: 72%, Price: £15
  • Sainsburys Aperitivo – Score: 69%, Price: £8

The discounter’s Aperini  – £6.99 for 700ml – was the top tipple for four in 10 tasters and was more than 50% cheaper than Aperol, a saving of £8 per bottle. 

In a separate test, the consumer group pitted Aldi and Tesco fruit-based gin cups against Pimm’s No.1.

Aldi’s Summer Punch – £7.49 for 700ml – was the cheapest of the three drinks tested, but also the highest-rated overall, scoring 72%.

More people picked it as their preferred drink compared to Tesco and Pimm’s, with 45% saying it was their favourite of the three.

Tesco’s Summer Cup (£8 for 700ml) narrowly edged ahead of Pimm’s to take second place in their taste test, with a score of 69%. 

It costs just 50p more per 700ml bottle compared to Aldi, giving Tesco shoppers a great value option for tasty summer cocktails.

In a separate taste test, Which? asked 100 people to rate Aperol against two supermarket aperitifs from Aldi and Sainsbury’s.

Again Aldi, the cheapest of the bunch, came out on top with a score of 74 per cent.

Sainsbury’s ownbrand alternative, an £8 bottle of Aperitivo narrowly came in third place scoring 69%.

It’s worth noting though that we’ve spotted that Morrisons has slashed the price of Aperol to just £10 ahead of the long weekend if you’re looking to save on the branded tipple.
