A Premim Bonds holder has scooped a £100,000 prize in May’s prize draw from a £100 holding they had bought just over a year earlier.

The lucky winner, based in Inner London put the £100 into Premium Bonds in March 2023, meaning that in the space of just over a year they made a whopping 99,900 per cent return.

Meanwhile, another Premium Bonds holder based in West Yorkshire bagged a £50,000 prize from a £125 holding in bonds they purchased in June 2018.

Two lucky Premium Bonds holders will spring into May as millionaires having won the Premium Bonds £1million jackpot prizes.

One of the coveted £1million jackpot prizes was won by a Premium Bonds customer from Hampshire, with a holding of £45,000. The winning bonds were purchased in September 2022.

The other £1million prize was scooped by a  saver based in Outer London who had a holding of £10,575 in Premium Bonds. Their winning bonds were purchased in July 2020.

This month, 45 per cent of the highest value prizes – the £1million, £100,000 and £50,000 prizes – were won by customers with the maximum holding of £50,000, This is Money analysis can reveal.

A total of 5,888,574 prizes worth £453,420,125 will be paid out in the May 2024 prize draw.

There were two £1million prizes in this month’s draw, 87 £100,000 prizes and 173 £50,000 prizes. 

Andrew Westhead, NS&I retail director, said: ‘Congratulation to our two new millionaires from Hampshire and Outer London. We’re glad that we can bring a smile to so many people each month with our tax-free prizes, ranging from £25 up to £1million.

‘This year we celebrate thirty years since ERNIE drew our first ever millionaire. The total prize pot for May was more than £453million with over 5.8million prizes being drawn. 

‘Each £1 Bond has an equal chance of winning so the more you save the more chances you have to win a tax-free prize.’
