IF you’re hoping for a white Christmas, you’ll want to make sure your iPhone is set up properly.

The app has two clever features that have been around for a few years, but are easily missed.

Long gone are the days when Apple‘s Weather app was mocked for being poor.

The app is now brimming with handy features – including one that’s perfect for some Christmas snowfall.

What is the iPhone snow trick?

There are two elements to this iPhone trick.

The first is simply that the weather map lets you scrub through a timeline.

So you can see if that big area of precipitation (which, when cold enough, will be snow) is going to hit you – and when.

First, boot up the default Weather app on your iPhone

Then tap on the map icon in the bottom-left corner.

Now in the top-right corner, select the three stacked squares and then choose Precipitation.

Then you’ll be able to use the bottom bar to scrub along through time to follow the snow, if there is any.

The second wintry element of the Weather app is turning on snow alerts.

These will warn you when rain or snow is about to start.

You’ll get enough notice to get your hat and gloves on so you can be ready and outside for a Christmas flurry.

How to turn on iPhone snow alerts

Open the Weather app and navigate to the page titled Weather.

That might involve tapping an icon in the bottom-right with three stacked dots and lines.

Now tap the three dots in the top-right corner and choose Notifications.

You’ll need to grant location access to the Weather app if you haven’t already.

Then you can turn on Notifications for Next-Hour Precipitation.

You can also set them up for Your Locations at the bottom, which will alert you to rain or snow in specific places – rather than exactly where you are.

The good news is that you can set up snow alerts for both current and fixed locations.

So you’ll always be prepared to enjoy an upcoming snowfall.
