AN ULTRA rare PS5 console has been spotted by gaming enthusiasts – and it’s one they’ll never own.

The console has appeared in a “one of a kind” retro design inspired by Sony‘s very first PlayStation device, the PS1.

It features the PS1’s distinctive grey finish with the famous four-coloured PS logo on the side of the machine.

The PS5 controller takes inspiration from the DualShock 1 of the past, with the chunky plug on the end that many mature gamers will remember fondly.

Even the box packaging has retro branding and style.

But sadly for PlayStation devotees it’s not a version of the PS5 they’ll ever own, no matter how much they’re willing to pay.

The old school looking PS5 was especially made by the firm as a retirement gift for their outgoing CEO, Jim Ryan.

He is stepping down in March 2024 after almost 30 years with the company.

Yuichi Haga – Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead at Sony Interactive Entertainment – shared pictures on social media of Jim’s thank you party with the unique gift.

“Sad I won’t be around for #TheGameAwards but I couldn’t pass up the chance to go to Jim Ryan’s thank you party and be around some legends and this one of a kind “Jim Ryan” PS5 with PS1 style,” he tweeted.

Fans reacted begging for the company to release a retro-looking PS5 console in future.

“Oh man that PS5 colour scheme would sell like hot cakes to the public!” one wrote.

“Yooooo that PS1 style PS5/DualSense is fire,” another said.

“PlayStation needs to release that special edition PlayStation,” a third commented.

It’s not the first time Sony has given its latest devices a PS1-inspired makeover.

Back in 2014, the firm released only 12,300 PS4 consoles made to look like the first PS machine to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Naturally, fans are hoping Sony might do the same with the PS5 next year when PlayStation will hit its 30th year in December.
