Here are some ideas to try during half-term.

NIFTY FIFTY: The National Trust has a “50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾” list at nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/50-things.

“Plus, you do not need to visit an official site to take part.

Building a den, stone skimming and rolling down hills are among the ideas given.

Why not challenge children to complete as much of the list as possible before half-term is over?

HAVE FUN-GI: At this time of year, fungi is springing up across woodland and grassy areas.

Children are often intrigued by these weird and wonderful growths – and will love the names.

Many are poisonous, but it is fine to look and get up close without danger.

Try finding turkey tail, yellow brain or green elf cup, to name but a few.

You can take pictures and try to identify different species — or ask kids to draw each one they spot.

The charity Plantlife is also encouraging nature lovers to take part in “Waxcap Watch” to spot Britain’s most colourful and important fungi.

Find pictures of the species and more information on how to take part at plantlife.org.uk/waxcapwatch.

It is always advisable to wash hands if any fungi are touched.

ZOG TRAILS: The Forestry Commission has combined the popular story of Zog the learner dragon with outdoor activity trails.

Download the free Zog: A Forest Adventure app and it can be used at 26 sites across the country.

Using augmented reality features, kids can complete the challenges, including learning to fly and roar to win gold stars.

At the same time, they will learn about forests and wildlife.

There are Zog trail activity packs to buy for £4. Find your nearest one at forestryengland.uk/visit.
