Ms Mordaunt told the Commons that petrol companies inflating prices has been “an issue for some time”.

And this week watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched a probe into whether “any failure in competition” is leaving hard up Brits paying higher fuel prices than they should be.

Ms Mordaunt said: “We’ve had an announcement from the CMA to say there is something additional going on over and above the lag between buying wholesale and the price at the pump.

“This is an important issue for many.”

The minister praised The Sun for campaigning to keep costs down.

“I know The Sun newspaper has been supporting and campaigning on the issue,” she said.

“The message from all members of this House to the CMA is to get its finger out, get to the bottom of this, so we can ensure our constituents and businesses are being dealt with fairly.”

Petrol price rip-offs could be close to an end as Ministers plan to appoint a Pumpwatch regulator in a massive win for drivers.

Retailers would face pressure to end the huge gulf between what hard-up drivers pay at the pump and plunging wholesale costs under the plans.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Business Secretary Grant Shapps are urgently looking at the matter to make pricing more transparent.

But no announcement or decision has been made yet.

Ms Mordaunt added: “Fuel at the pump is absolutely vital and people shouldn’t be paying more than they have to.”
