At first glance, you’d be forgiven for mistaking these as the latest luxury headphones.

However, put down your lunch, as the ‘headphones’ are actually a bizarre new device to clear out earwax.

The OtoSet Ear Cleaning System blasts water into your ear canals and promises to rid your ears of wax in just 35 seconds.

However, if you’re hoping to ditch the cotton buds in favour of the new device, you’ll have to start saving.

OtoSet Ear Cleaning System has an eye-watering $2,753 (£2,297) price tag.

Seattle-based medical startup SafKan Health has received $8 million (£6.67 million) of funding this month for the device.

It says it is the first FDA-cleared ear cleaning device to remove mild to severe earwax impactions quickly and safely.

For use by healthcare professionals only, it employs a novel system of irrigation and micro-suction technology, all built into an automated and wearable device resembling a familiar and sleek pair of headphones.

In a quick cleaning cycle, liquid flow is directed from solution containers through disposable ear tips and toward the walls of the ear canals to break down earwax.

Continuous micro-suction draws the earwax and liquid back through the ear tips and into disposable waste containers for a simple, clean procedure.

The firm say the device offers patients a ‘safe, effective, and mess-free procedure.’

It was announced last week that investment firm Unorthodox Ventures has added a lead investment in SafKan Health, developers of the FDA-cleared OtoSet Ear Cleaning System.

The $8 million (£6.67 million) funding will help the company as it debuts OtoSet, with total funding to date of $13 million (£10.86 million).

SafKan Health Co-Founder and CEO Sahil Diwan says: ‘What impressed us first about Unorthodox Ventures is their knowledge of all things manufacturing, a major help for us as we grow our business.

‘Beyond that, their willingness to assist us in all aspects of our business is what makes Unorthodox Ventures such a unique and welcome partner.’

Unorthodox Ventures ‘Founding Contrarian’ Carey Smith adds: ‘I’ve dedicated my career to transforming old technology for the modern era, from ceiling fans to handsanitizer systems.

‘SafKan Health is doing the same with OtoSet.’

What is earwax build-up?

Earwax usually falls out on its own but, in some cases, it can become blocked.

It cannot be prevented as the wax is there to protect ears from water, dirt germs, infection and foreign bodies.

You are more likely to suffer buildup if:

  • You naturally produce more wax
  • You have hairy or narrow ear canals
  • You are elderly because wax hardens with age
  • You wear a hearing aid, headphones or earbuds as these push wax in further

Symptoms include earache, difficulty hearing, itchiness, dizziness, an ear infection and tinnitus.

You can try using over-the-counter wax softening drops or warm water to irrigate your ears.

If this doesn’t work, seek professional medical help in case of infection.
