WICKES will shut its shops for three days over Christmas this year to give its staff a break.

The DIY chain said it wants to say thanks to its workers for their hard graft during the coronavirus crisis.

Wickes will be closed on December 24, 25 and December 26.

It means the last day shoppers can browse in stores before Christmas is December 23.

Stores will then open again on December 27.

It’s the first time Wickes has shut its doors on Christmas Eve in its 48 years on the high street.

The retailer gave staff Boxing Day off last year, and it has always shut on Christmas Day.

Wickes confirmed to The Sun that the days will be treated as extra holiday, meaning staff will get paid for being off.

The DIY chain has remained open throughout the Covid-19 pandemic due to being classed as an “essential” retailer.

Hardware stores have been allowed to keep serving customers as they sell products that are vital for home improvements.

Wickes has 235 shops in the UK. You can use the online store finder tool to locate your nearest one.

Its opening hours for the rest of the year will be 7am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4.00pm on Sundays.

David Wood, chief executive officer, at Wickes said: “The decision to close our stores and give our colleagues some meaningful time off was an easy one.

“It’s been an unprecedented year and we wanted to take a moment to recognise the tremendous effort our team has gone to.

“At a time when we usually connect with others, we felt it was right to support our colleagues with more time with friends and loved ones.”

Wickes is the first major retailer to confirm it’s shutting stores for more days than usual over Christmas.
