A HOTEL owner dubbed Britain’s best boss has given his staff nearly £200,000 as a reward for their “hard work” over the summer.

Philema Hospitality Management, the family-run company which owns the Fistral Beach Hotel and the Esplanade Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall, is splitting the cash between its 325 employees.

The company, which also manages Devon’s Boringdon Hall Hotel & Gaia Spa, saw a surge in customers over the summer season.

Increased numbers came as pent-up tourists booked sun-seeking holidays in the first summer since the end of pandemic restrictions.

Philema said its staff had offered “great service” amidst the growing demand for UK staycations.

The £182,166 bonus payment was split between staff who worked for the hotel group between April and September this year.

They also received commission, service charges and manager bonuses on top of the extra cash pot.

The company said that individual bonuses were based on the number of hours people worked and so varied case-by-case.

As well as yearly bonuses, employees receive perks including off-peak spa and gym membership, discounts on hotels and restaurants, double pay at Christmas and New Year and an extra day of holiday for each year they have worked for Philema from five up to 15 years.

On top of all that, the company runs ‘Employee Appreciation Days’, which include vouchers and other treats being randomly given away to team members.

“We wanted to ensure this hard work was rewarded and their commitment to our family-run business was felt.

“We have been exceedingly fortunate during the past 12 to 18 months and have managed to retain much of our talented staff and invest in the future of our team.”

She added: “We have six individuals currently on apprenticeships and we are looking to expand this into next year.

“We have seen a huge success in our trainee manager programme this year and are looking to relaunch for the next intake in January 2023.”
