New research reveals NHS and healthcare workers are the UK’s most community minded staff.

Three in five joined the service to make a positive difference to the lives of people and 47 per cent have been involved in their local community since they started their career.
The report, from Opinion Matters and public sector club Boundless, also revealed a third of healthcare workers believe their workplace gives them a sense of community spirit.
Darren Milton at Boundless said: “People in public service roles routinely go the extra mile. Community spirit is clearly alive and well and growing across the country with our healthcare workers at the very heart of it.”
The findings are echoed by a study from Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of care, which found half of Brits have a higher opinion of health and social care workers following the pandemic.
But making a difference to others at work doesn’t have to mean big gestures or take a big bank balance. Here are Sun Jobs’ six simple ways to help others while you’re at work:
- See the person, not the worker: We’re all busy, but take a few minutes each day to go deeper than the superficial water cooler chat, Get to really know your colleagues and some may become friends.
- Shut down office gossip: Trading titbits of info can turn toxic and banter can quickly descend into bullying. Make sure you shut down trash talk at work to protect yourself and everyone you work with.
- Remember birthdays – and the not so nice anniversaries: Bring in a cake and celebrate everyone’s birthday. It brightens up the week and shows staff they are appreciated. But if someone has a more sombre milestone, such as the death of a loved one or pet, quietly acknowledge this too so they know they are not alone.
- Set up a charity initiative: Pull your workplace together with a shared charity fundraising drive. Chose a local charity close to your area or one which has helped staff members.
- Train as Mental Health First Aider: Every workplace has a traditional first aider to help with cuts, bruises or broken bones, and MHFAs do the same with your mind, acting as a first responder for any worries or concerns. Find out more at the MFA England website.
- Make the tea: It’s a little thing but it shows support and friendship for your fellow workers. Give them a cuppa with love each day.
