Payments for the £400 energy rebate will start to be paid from October, but how you will receive the money depends on how you pay for your energy bills.

The majority of the roughly 30million households who are getting the payment will receive their cash automatically in six instalments.

But those on prepayment meters will receive discount vouchers or special messages via email, text or post, and will then have to redeem them at their nearest top-up point.

Vouchers will be sent in the post while other customers will be sent a special action message (SAM) in the first week of each month, via SMS text or email.

The latest campaign between Citizens Advice and PayPoint is reminding these types of households to ensure their contact details are up to date so they receive their vouchers or messages.

The campaign will be promoted in all of PayPoint’s 28,000 locations on physical receipts and via social media.

Customers will also be directed to the Citizens Advice webpage for help.

It was announced as part of a raft of other government support to help households through the cost of living crisis.

But there are are a number of households who won’t get the payment.

The package of support was announced back in May by then chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The discount will be made in six monthly instalments from October until March.

The deductions will be worth £66 in October and November, and then £67 from December through to March.

The payments will be made automatically to those on smart prepayment meters and who pay for their bills via direct debit.

Energy suppliers can decide whether those customers are given the discount as a cash payment or as a bill credit.

Those on traditional prepayment meters will have to cash in their vouchers or messages.

You’ll be on a traditional prepayment meter if you have to top up via a card or key fob which you have to use to add cash to at a PayPoint kiosk.

However, if you don’t redeem the vouchers within three months of receiving them they will expire.

You’ll then have to request a new voucher from your energy firm.
