England’s biggest winery Chapel Down has been signed up as cricket’s official bubbly.

A partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board means its sparkling wine replaces champagne sprayed by competition winners.

The board has previously teamed up with champagne brands and the tie-up is its first deal with an English wine maker.

Chapel Down, which makes still and sparkling red and white wines, will be sold at stadiums. It is also the official sparkling wine of the Oxford and Cambridge boat race.

Listed on the challenger Aquis stock exchange, the winery has 780 acres of vineyards in south-east England.

It is worth £68m and owned by around 8,500 shareholders. Sales boomed during the pandemic as Britons drank more in lockdown.

Chapel Down boss Andrew Carter said: ‘We are delighted that future English cricket success will be celebrated with Chapel Down, English sparkling wine.’

Cricket’s county championship starts today.
