TODAY is ‘National Day of Unplugging’. It’s a tech-free day that started in the US, and has become popular around the world.

The idea is to take a 24-hour rest from our devices.

So put your phones and tablets away, switch off the TV and read on for cheap activities to fill your day.

BEST FOOT FORWARD: Going for a walk sounds pretty obvious. But make it interesting by picking somewhere entirely new (and free).

Use the National Parks website nationalparks.uk for inspiration, or The Wildlife Trusts website to find a free nature reserve at wildlifetrusts.org. Take a friend and a flask of tea.

PLAY TIME: Contact your local theatre and ask what’s on. Be brave with your choice – if it’s an unheard-of play hopefully the fee will reflect that.

It’s also London Theatre Week until Sunday – meaning big discounts on popular performances showing in the capital. You can find out more at londontheatre.co.uk/london-theatre-week.

ATTRACTION DISTRACTION: Always been meaning to ride the London Eye? Gawk at Stonehenge? Visit Chester Zoo? Pick a destination and make it happen. Travel by train to get 2-4-1 entry at top attractions – visit daysoutguide.co.uk

You can also treble the value of your Tesco Clubcard vouchers when you spend them on entry to the likes of Warwick Castle, National Sea Life Centres and Madame Tussauds.

NOVEL IDEAS: Whether it’s a weepy tale or one to make you laugh out loud, it’s a fitting follow-up to yesterday’s World Book Day to relax with a paperback. Dig one off the shelf that you’ve been meaning to read or head to a charity shop for a pre-loved novel.

FLAVOUR THE MOMENT: With so many recipes available instantly online, many old cook books are gathering dust on the shelf at home. Time to dust them off and find a long-forgotten favourite. Make a mess and savour the flavour.
