Now one water company is urging Brits to be careful disposing of the liquids this festive season.

Pouring grease down the sink can block up pipes, South West water has warned.

Iain Vosper, the company’s wastewater director, said doing this can cause blockages and fatbergs.

“Think about your sink this Christmas time, and don’t dispose cooking fats, oils and greases down the drain,” he said.

“These mix with wrongly flushed items such as wet wipes, hygiene wipes, cleaning wipes, cleansing pads and sanitary products causing blocked sewers which can lead to flooding in your homes and in the environment.”

The water company, which serves the south west of England including Devon and Cornwall, said that fat from turkeys poured down sinks would fill nearly 3,000 bathtubs.

You shouldn’t pour turkey fat or other greases or fats from cooking down the sink or toilet.

To safely dispose of the liquids after cooking you should wait for them to become solid again.

You can do this in the pan, or pouring it into another container, then scrape the fat into your food waste bin

A blocked sink could lead to calling out a plumber or drainage specialist.

According to Myjobquote the average cost of unblocking drains is £100, but could cost more if the issue is serious, or over the Christmas period when some charge more.

Water firms estimate clogged sewers cost them an estimated £80million a year to clear.

The Consumer Council for Water has previously warned that water companies spend £100million of customer’s cash every year unclogging sewers.

Meanwhile here’s four things you MUST do to stop your pipes freezing this winter, according to an expert.
