This house is in the Tamarisk section of Rancho Mirage, named after the Tamarisk Country Club, a golf and tennis club less than a mile away that was founded in 1952. Several other golf courses are within a five-minute drive, so the area is popular with golfers, and golf carts are as common a sight in driveways as cars.

Rancho Mirage is about 20 minutes from the heart of Palm Springs and about the same distance from the Coachella Valley Preserve, making rentals in the area a popular choice for those attending the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Size: 2,620 square feet

Price per square foot: $372

Indoors: A short path leads from the driveway to the front door, which opens into a sunny foyer. Several paces beyond is the main living area, which has vaulted ceilings and a bay window overlooking the street. The dining room — used by the sellers as a game room — is open to the living room, with windows looking into the center courtyard.

Past the dining room is a large kitchen, updated as part of a recent renovation that also included a new roof. At the center of the kitchen is a quartz-topped, waterfall-style island. The other kitchen counters are also quartz, with a patterned-tile backsplash, and there is a secondary bar area with a wine refrigerator and an additional sink. From either side of the kitchen, sliding-glass doors open to the central courtyard and pool area.

A hallway off the kitchen leads to two guest rooms with access to a full bathroom. From the foyer, another hall leads to a third guest room, a powder room and the primary suite, which was updated during the renovation. A barn-style door leads from the large bedroom to a bathroom with a glass-walled shower partially open to an area that includes a soaking tub. The primary bedroom, like the kitchen, has direct access to the courtyard.

Outdoor space: The house is built around an open-air courtyard with painted-tile floors and a latticed canopy for shade. The property includes a gazebo, an outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue and a bar, and a swimming pool with an attached spa and an adjacent grassy area. The attached garage holds two cars and has a laundry area.

Taxes: $12,480 (estimated)

This large property is currently home to goats, horses, chickens and pigs. Despite the relatively pastoral setting, it is 10 minutes from the stores, restaurants and big-box retailers in the downtown area of Petaluma, a city of about 60,000. The town of Point Reyes Station, on the coast, is about half an hour’s drive, as are the wineries of Santa Rosa.

Size: 1,154 square feet

Price per square foot: $845

Indoors: The house is separated from the street by a wooden fence. Behind it is a patch of grass and a new porch added by the sellers, who also installed a new roof and recently repainted the home’s interior and exterior.

The front door, a cheery aqua blue, opens into a living room with hardwood floors and windows that face the porch. Off one side of this space is a bedroom with a wood-paneled accent wall.

At the far side of the living room is a door to what the sellers call the great room, which has a wood-burning stove and space for a dining table on the near side and a kitchen at the back. The kitchen was recently updated with new stainless steel appliances and a subway-tile backsplash.

A door on the left side of the great room leads to the primary bedroom, which is large enough to hold a queen-size bed. Also off the dining area is the bathroom, where a combination tub and shower sits opposite two porcelain pedestal sinks.

Two additional bedrooms, each with room for bunk beds and a desk, are on a lower level, where there is additional space that could be turned into more living quarters.

Outdoor space: The property has a small pond and several outbuildings in good condition, including a barn, a horse shelter with cement floors and a chicken coop. The landscape has gentle slopes with several flat areas, and there is room for horseback riding. A detached garage holds one car, and additional vehicles, including a horse trailer, could fit comfortably in the driveway.

Taxes: $12,192 (estimated)

The Mission District has been called the city’s sunniest neighborhood, and this corner loft unit takes advantage of that with more windows than others in the building, as well as a private outdoor space. Mission Street, the main drag, is about 10 minutes away on foot, and offers bars, restaurants and an Alamo Drafthouse movie theater. Mission Dolores Park is about a mile away, as is the 16th St. Mission stop on the BART system.

Size: 1,157 square feet

Price per square foot: $843

Indoors: The unit’s front door opens into a kitchen with tile floors, stainless steel appliances, a honey-colored wood ceiling and matching cabinetry. A half bathroom and a closet are to the left of the entry.

Beyond the kitchen is an open living area with double-height ceilings and large windows that flood the room with natural light. There is space for a dining table and chairs near the kitchen and a sitting area beyond, near the fireplace. Sliding-glass doors open to a large balcony.

Under the stairs that lead up to the bedroom is a reading nook that could be used as a home office space.

The area upstairs is open to the room below, with recessed lighting and windows on one side. There is room for a queen-size bed and a desk, and a wall closet provides storage space. The en suite bathroom has a separate vanity area and a combination tub and shower.

Outdoor space: The main living area faces an outdoor space that is large enough to hold furniture and workout equipment; it is surrounded by the backyards of several neighboring houses and is relatively private. This unit comes with one spot in the building’s secure parking garage, as well as a secure storage space.

Taxes: $11,892 (estimated), plus a $409 monthly homeowner association fee
