This house was designed by Claude Howell, a Louisiana-born architect who served as a construction superintendent for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In Richmond, Mr. Howell’s projects included a number of large homes on Monument Avenue, one of the city’s most prestigious streets, and several theaters downtown.

This house is on a stretch of Monument Avenue a few blocks from Broad Street, one of Richmond’s main thoroughfares, putting it within walking distance of a Whole Foods market, a theater in a converted firehouse and a number of restaurants. It is a five-minute drive from Virginia Commonwealth University and 10 minutes from the Virginia State Capitol.
