A FAMOUS lottery winner who netted a cool £11million was so tight that he “never got a round in”.

Paul Maddison won £11million in 1995, but was reportedly a modern-day “scrooge” living in a £100,000 flat when he died.

After winning the mammoth jackpot, Paul went on to splurge on a lavish romantic wedding on Valentines day in Mauritius, before buying his very own castle to share with his fourth wife.

Although he initially enjoyed the high-life with one of the biggest lotto jackpots to ever be given at the time, a friend of his paints the picture of a man who only spent money when he had to and neighbours say he rarely left his home.

A close friend of Paul previously told MailOnline: “Paul was the tightest person I’ve ever known.

“He never bought a round in all the years I’ve known him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he still had the whole Camelot pay-out in a box under his bed.”

Originally from East-Sussex, Paul claimed £11million after splitting a £22million jackpot with former business partner, Mark Gardiner.

After winning he moved to Perth, Scotland, for a quieter life.

But less than a year later his marriage to then-wife Ruth fell to bits after she left him for a new lover.

The father-of-two, who worked as a double-glazing salesman, then married Evelyn McGillivary, a cleaner he hired to maintain his six-bedroom lodge.

The pair fell in love and eventually moved to a 16th-century Robgill Tower near Dumfries for £650,000.

According to locals in Kirtlebridge, a village close to Perth, Paul and his new bride were scarcely seen leaving their 40-acre estate.

They also installed remote controlled gates, an intercom and security cameras on the property immediately after moving in, later selling the glitzy palace for nearly £3million in 2008.

The modern day “scrooge” was so tight with his money that he even sued a small dry cleaners for damages of less than £1,000, claiming they ruined a bedspread he sent in to have cleaned.

Paul died last year, aged 73, just a few months after Evelyn – and by then had sold his castle.

Speaking before she passed away, Evelyn told the Record: “We have done the big house thing. Now we want something more manageable.

“This house is lottery fantasy now. Maybe another winner will buy it.”

In his later years, he reportedly lived in a far more modest abode – a £100,000 flat in Perth – after selling his castle.

Neighbours of the rich couple shared the same view of the millionaires.

One said: “Paul was famously stingy – you know, tight with his money. He never got his wallet out if he could avoid it. He was never first to the bar buying a round of drinks.

“If that happened he’d be gone. He was very, very careful with what he spent.

“And he barely went out. You wouldn’t see him for weeks at a time. And when you did he wouldn’t catch your eye.”

And, former business partner Mark said he was surprised to hear of Paul’s most recent spending – said to have donated huge sums to a Jehovah’s Witness movement that he had joined.

He said: “The Paul I knew was very careful with his money and watched it like a hawk. I can’t believe he’d hand everything over to the church. It just doesn’t seem like something he’d do.”
