Aldi will keep its stores shut on Boxing Day, just like it has done in previous years. Shops will also be shut on Christmas Day.

This means the last time you’ll be able to shop in Aldi before the big day is Christmas Eve, when its stores will close on 6pm.

Over New Year, Aldi will shut the majority of its stores at 6pm on New Year’s Eve. Its supermarkets will then remain close on New Year’s Day.

Asda has also confirmed it’ll close its stores on Boxing Day this year. Shops will be closed on Christmas Day like normal too.

For shoppers who need last-minute dinner bits, you’ll want to note that Asda supermarkets will close from 7pm on Christmas Eve.

We’ve asked Asda to confirm its New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day hours and we’ll update this article when we know more.

Last year, Asda shops ran reduced hours – most large shops opened 9am to 7pm on December 31.

Then on New Year’s Day, stores opened much later, running a 10am to 5pm schedule to kick off 2019.

Another retailer keeping its doors closed on Boxing Day is Home Bargains. Its stores will also stay shut on Christmas Day, as normal.

Your last date to shop in Home Bargains before Christmas will be Christmas Eve, where stores are expected to close at 5pm.

Then over New Year, stores are expected to be open 8am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve before closing on New Year’s Day.

Lidl stores in England outside of the M25 will stay closed on Boxing Day, but shops inside the London ring-road will open from 10am until 7pm.

On Christmas Eve, stores will close early – at 7pm for shops within the M25, 6pm for those outside of it

All Lidl supermarkets will then remain close on Christmas Day.

In terms of New Year, Lidl will close its London stores at 8pm, and those outside the M25 at 6pm.

Its supermarkets will then remain shut on New Year’s Day, apart from those inside the M25 which will open from 10am until 7pm.

Marks and Spencer has gone back on a decision to keep 200 of its stores open on Boxing Day, meaning all of its shops will now be shut on December 26.

As always, its stores will remain shut on Christmas Day too.

Last year, most M&S stores shut at 6pm on Christmas Eve – but M&S hasn’t confirmed its December 24 hours for this year.

We also don’t know yet if M&S stores will close over New Year.

In 2019, shops were were open from 7am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve, and from 9am to 7pm on New Year’s Day.

Pets at Home has also joined the supermarkets in keeping its stores closed on December 26.

It’s not clear how late Pets at Home shops will stay open until on Christmas Eve, but its stores are expected to be closed as normal on Christmas Day.

Pets at Home also hasn’t confirmed its New Year hours.

In previous years, shops have opened until 5pm on New Year’s Eve and some stores – but not all – remained shut on New Year’s Day.

Poundland shoppers won’t be able to browse stores on Boxing Day, as its shops will be closed. They’ll also remain shut on Christmas Day.

Unfortunately, the budget retailer hasn’t confirmed its hours for Christmas Eve but stores are expected to be open.

Over the New Year, shops will be open on New Year’s Eve but they’ll be shut on New Year’s Day.

Again, the Poundland hasn’t confirmed its New Year’s Eve hours but opening times are likely to be shorter.

Toy retailer The Entertainer will close for three consecutive days over Christmas, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and December 27.

Shops will still be open on Christmas Eve between 8am and 5pm for parents to snag very last-minute presents.

The Entertainer hasn’t confirmed its New Year hours, but we’ll update this article when it does.

Shops have been open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in the past.

The majority of Waitrose stores remain shut on Boxing Day, with the exception of those in Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell forecourts.

The same goes for Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, most stores will open from 7am to 6pm.

On New Year’s Eve, opening hours will be 8am to 6pm. The majority of shops will then close again on New Year’s Day, again, except for a small number.

These include shops that have varying opening hours between 7am and 10pm.

Wickes will close its stores for three days over Christmas, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

It means the last day shoppers can browse in stores before Christmas is December 23.

We’ve asked the retailer what it has planned for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and we’ll update this article when we know more.

Wickes has remained open on these days in the past.

What about other retailers?

Morrisons: Morrisons has yet to confirm its Christmas opening times for 2020.

Last year, most big Morrisons opened 9am to 6pm on Boxing Day.

On New Year’s Eve, superstores opened and closed doors from 7am to 6pm.

There were slightly later opening hours on New Year’s Day, with most shops running 9am to 6pm.

Saisbury’s: Most Sainsbury’s stores will open from 6am to 7pm on Christmas Eve. Its shops will be closed on Christmas Day.

On Boxing Day,  Sainsbury’s stores will be open from 10am to 5pm.

Then over the New Year, the majority of stores will open from 7am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve, 9am to 7pm on New Year’s Day.

Tesco: Tesco has yet to confirm its all of its Christmas opening times yet.

On Boxing Day, Tesco Extras, Superstores and Metro stores in England, Scotland and Wales were from 9am to 6pm.

On New Year’s Eve in 2019, Tesco Extras, Superstores and Metro stores were open at their usual time and closed at 7pm.

Express stores closed at 10pm, while petrol stations shut an hour after the main store closed.

Then on January 1 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Extras, Superstores and Metro stores opened from 9am to 6pm.

Express stores were open from 8am to 10pm.
