If a coin has a low mintage, meaning there weren’t many made, they are usually valuable.

And, if a piece was manufactured with a mistake or has a unique serial number, then it can also be worth more than expected.

Sometimes bidding wars break out over particularly rare coins which means they could rake in even more cash.

Now, people are being warned to check if they have a special 50p from the Athletics Olympic set from 2011.

Regular change dated 2011 is usually only worth £2 as it had a mintage of over two million.

But, three years earlier the same Athletics coin was minted in 2009, which makes it rare compared to other Olympics in the set.

This unique piece was actually designed by a Blue Peter competition winner and they were sold for just £5 at the time.

However, in the end less than 20,000 were sold from 100,000 made, which makes them worth up to £300 today.

“If you find an Olympic coin, always check the date as this hugely affects the value,” an expert said in a helpful TikTok.

How to check if your small change is worth anything

Online tools from change experts like Coin Hunter are helpful to see how much a coin is worth.

You can also refer to Change Checker’s latest scarcity index update to see which coins are the most valuable today.

eBay is also a great place to see how much the coin is selling for, just search the full name and select the “sold” listing, then opt for the “highest value” filter.

But remember, coins are only really worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

This comes as five of the rarest coins and notes worth up to £3,600 were revealed – do you have one in your wallet?

Plus, one coin sold for 300 times its value after Royal Mint error.

The 50p Kew Gardens coin features the Chinese Pagoda at the famous London landmark of the same name.

Meanwhile, an “exceptionally rare” £5 note has been found and now sold for an eye-watering price.
