RIPPED-off shoppers are paying up to four times more for advent calendar chocolates than they would if they bought standard packs.

The worst deals include the £10 Quality Street calendar, which contains 230g of chocolate — a total of 4.3p a gram.

But a 375g bag of the family favourites costs £4 — the equivalent of 1.1p a gram.

It makes the calendar choccies nearly four times, or 300 per cent, more expensive.

The £6 Celebrations calendar contains 215g of chocolate, working out at 2.8p a gram.

But a 600g tub is just £4.50 or 0.8p a gram.

It means you pay more than three times as much for the chocolate in the calendar.

And a Cadbury’s Heroes calendar is £6 for 230g of chocolate (2.6p a gram), with a 300g bag £4.25 (1.4p a gram), making the festive offering twice as expensive.

A Ferrero Rocher calendar with a stunning gold Christmas tree looks amazing but it costs £12 despite only having 271 grams of chocolate while 518 grams of chocolate in a box costs just £11.50.

That means the calendar chocolate is 4.4p per gram – exactly double the cost.

Consumer expert Jane Hawkes said: “Save a packet by making your own calendar at home with a big tub of choccies — plus you’ll have plenty left over on Boxing Day.”
