WILKO has announced it won’t be opening its stores on Boxing Day to give its workers a break – joining M&S and Poundland in shutting its doors.

The retailer said that customers won’t be able to visit any of its 416 stores on Boxing Day so staff can spend quality times with loved ones.

However, over the Christmas period, Wilko usually extends its shopping hours – so shoppers will have more time to get their hauls in the run-up to Christmas.

Last year, most of its shops were open until 8am-7pm from December 14 to January 3 this year.

Boxing Day is usually when shops launch their post-Christmas sales and shift stock before the next season.

But other retailers are also closing for business on Boxing Day this year too – meaning that you’ll have to wait a little longer to hit the sales in stores.

Marks & Spencer will be closing all of its stores – including food halls – on Boxing Day to give its 70,000 staff a break.

The high street giant wrote to all its workers last month telling them not to come in on December 26 to say thanks for their hard work this year.

Home Bargains will also give staff a break the day after Christmas.

Plus, it will also close at the earlier time of 5pm on Christmas Eve to allow its 22,000 employees to have a longer festive break.

Fans of Poundland won’t be able to visit stores on Boxing Day.

It’s the second time the bargain retailer has given staff time off the day after Christmas.

The Entertainer will be closed too.

Staff will return to work as normal on Monday, December 27 though.

If you’re planning on getting in some essential supplies, make sure you check if your local supermarket is open.

Morrisons, Aldi and Sainsbury’s have so far confirmed that they will shut over Boxing Day.

Feeling festive? Take a look at Tesco’s Christmas sandwich range – and it includes a pigs in blankets sub and Yorkshire pudding wraps.

Costa has launched its Christmas menu and it includes Quality Street lattes.

Greggs has revealed the exact date the Festive Bake is back – and it’s launching a vegan version too.
