HOME owners might need to get planning permission before they install a heat pump in their house.

The government announced earlier this week that Brits can get a £5,000 grant to put towards getting a heat pump installed.

It comes as part of government plans to slash emissions and make Britain greener.

The free cash will help Brits prepare for the possible gas boiler ban in 2035.

While the grants will help lower the cost of installing pricey heat pumps, hidden admin faff could be facing Brits who successfully apply for the help.

Energy saving trust has warned that you could have to apply to your local council for planning permission to install one.

An energy saving trust spokesperson said: “Before installing a heat pump, it is important to check if you need to apply to your local planning authority for permission.”

We explain all we know so far about the potential planning restrictions and what you need to check before getting a heat pump put in.

Do you need planning permission to install a heat pump?

You might need planning permission in place to install a heat pump – it’s important to check with your local authority before you get one put in.

You often need planning permission if you want to build something new, make a major change to your building, or change the use of your building.

Some home owners might need to get approval from the council to put one in, according to energy saving trust.

It says that although most heat pump installations are considered to be “permitted developments”, which mean they don’t need planning permission, this does not apply in some cases.

For example, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, you will need to check with your local authority if you need approval to put one in.

To find out who your local council is, head to the gov.uk‘s website.

It’s also worth noting that heat pumps can be bulky to install – keep this in mind if you’re strapped for space.

How much does planning permission cost?

The government hasn’t confirmed how much it could cost you to lodge a planning application for a heat pump if you need to.

We’ve asked for more information and will update you when we know more.

It is expected that more details about how to apply will be set out before homeowners can officially apply for the help next April.

It costs £206 for a household to submit a planning application – although you can use Planning Portal‘s fee calculator to check whether this could vary for you.

Make sure to contact your local planning authority (LPA) before submitting your request if you’re unsure about filing your application.

Energy saving trust also said that homeowners should get at least three local installers to quote them a price for installing a heat pump.

This is so you can get the best price for getting it fitted.

Do I have to tell anyone else about my heat pump plans?

Energy saving trust adds that you should inform your local district network operator that you are planning on installing a heat pump.

This is the company that is responsible for bringing electricity to your home from the network.

Energy saving trust says you should contact your installer who can tell your operator on your behalf.

Here’s what you need to know about heat pumps and how they work.

And here’s how much one costs.

It comes as house buyers might have to make their homes greener to clinch the best mortgage deals under new government plans.
