Why have McDonald’s breakfast wraps and bagels been taken off the menu?

McDonald’s fans had been hoping the bagels and breakfast wraps would one day return after they were removed from the menu during the first wave of the Coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

But in a new statement, McDonald’s has confirmed that they won’t be making a return.

The fast-food chain announced on Monday, January 24 that the popular breakfast items would not be returning to restaurants.

The chain left a lengthy message on their official Twitter page, announcing their “parting ways” with bagels and breakfast wraps that the nation came to cherish.

Their tweet reads: “Bad news: Bagels and Breakfast Wraps are officially gone from the menu.” with a picture of a detailed love letter announcing their breakup with the popular breakfast dishes.

The post reads: “It is with love and deep respect for one another that we announce that we are parting ways with Breakfast Bagels and Breakfast wraps.

“We adore each other deeply but our love for the iconic McMuffin was simply too hard to ignore.

“We want our fans to know that this is a mutual decision, to the extent that a bagel can make its own decision.

“But it’s now time to say, ‘that’s a wrap’.”

Have they been replaced by any new McDonald’s breakfast items?

Bagels and breakfast wraps were taken off the menu almost two years ago in the first lockdown when the fast-food chain introduced a limited menu for a while to keep their kitchens socially distanced.

Since then, they have continued to operate on a limited menu, with some items slowly making a return.

In their statement on Twitter, McDonald’s haven’t announced that the wraps or bagels will see a replacement any time soon, but did leave a small hint that something could be on the way in the future.

They wrote: “Thank you to everyone who has supported our union. As for the rumours that there will be a new breakfast bae on the scene later this year… no comment.”

Fan’s, however, are not impressed.

One McDonald’s customer said: “Can you at least tell us why they aren’t coming back? You removed them when you re-opened after the first lockdown. We assumed it was due to space in the kitchen.”

Another said: “This is the actual worst decision you’ve ever made.

“Sausage, egg and cheese bagels were officially the best thing on your menu.”

“I’ve been waiting 2 years for the breakfast wrap to return that’s the only breakfast item I have,” a disappointed customer said.

What is on the McDonald’s breakfast menu?

Their breakfast menu still boasts classics such as the Sausage McMuffin and breakfast pancakes.

McDonald’s also introduced a new breakfast roll to its morning menu last year.

They are also continuing to sell their breakfasts every day until 11am after the popular decision was made in 2019.

Here’s what’s on the menu:

  • Breakfast Roll with Ketchup or Brown Sauce
  • Sausage & Egg McMuffin
  • Egg & Cheese McMuffin
  • Bacon & Egg McMuffin
  • Bacon Roll with Ketchup or Brown Sauce
  • Muffin with Jam
  • Cheesy Flatbread
  • Pancakes with Sausage and Syrup
