GREGGS fans were left gutted after being unable to pay for their sausage rolls and bakes on Wednesday morning.

Shops across the country were struck by an IT glitch, with many being forced to shut their doors temporarily due to the problem at the tills.

Dozens of disgruntled foodies took to social media to complain they had been unable to pick up their morning fix.

It follows card payment outages at Sainsbury’s and Tesco, and McDonald’s last week.

Angry customers said they couldn’t pay at the tills, and company bosses admitted that most online shops would go undelivered.

At the time a spokesperson for Greggs told The Sun: “We are currently experiencing issues accepting payments in our shops.

“We are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”

The issues started at around 9am on Wednesday morning, but Greggs has since confirmed the problem has been fixed.

The chain said: “We have now resolved the technical issue that affected tills in some of our shops earlier this morning.

“The majority of shops affected are now able to take card and cash payments again and we expect the issue to be fully resolved shortly.”

It apologised for the inconvenience to its customers.

Signs were spotted in some store windows, with areas affected including Newcastle, Westminster and Cardiff.

Greggs operates more than 2,450 shops across the UK, though it is unclear how many were affected by the technical problems.

When will Greggs be back open?

Greggs says the issue affecting tills has now been fixed, with all affected stores expected to reopen shortly.

Earlier in the morning a customer said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that their local branch was closed, and posted a picture of a shop notice that read: “Shop will open late due to technical issues.”

Later, Greggs said the “majority of shops affected are now able to take card and cash payments again” and it soon expects the issue to be fully resolved.

It’s a good idea to phone ahead to your local shop to check it’s open and operating as normal before you head off for your morning sausage roll.

You can find your nearest branch using the store locator tool on the chain’s website.

How are Greggs customers affected?

Pastry lovers across the country were up in arms this morning.

One person wrote: “All my local Greggs stores are closed because of technical issues, missing my morning coffee.”

Another said: “Tills down Greggs – awful start to the day.”

Others revealed the odd experiences they’d had as they tried to nab their pastry and coffee.

One person: “Any reason why the Burlington street branch in Chesterfield is closed this morning?

“Staff are inside but shutters down and no signs of opening and no sign displayed to explain why?!”

Another said: “Weird experience in Greggs Lewisham just now.

“System down, so they couldn’t take a card payment. They wouldn’t take cash either.

“Bizarrely, though, I was told I could still order via Uber. Hello? I’m in the shop in front of you! Not impressed.”

Signs appearing in shop windows confirmed that customers can still order via courier apps such as UberEats and JustEat. Plus you can also pay using cash.
