THE PlayStation 5 sold out within minutes after it went on sale in the UK this morning, leaving gamers who missed out to wonder when they’ll next get the chance to buy one.

Retailers like Game and Amazon and expected to restock soon, so anxious fans have good reason to hope they’ll bag one in time for Christmas.

PS5 sold out – what happened?

Sony released two new consoles – the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – worldwide on November 19.

Stocks at multiple UK retailers ran dry shortly after orders opened during the morning on launch day.

Boasting 8K graphics and a powerful processor that almost eliminates loading times, it’s no surprise the consoles flew from the shelves.

Some stores also opened up sales of the consoles on Thursday afternoon, but those also went in a flash as word spread across social media.

When will UK stores restock?

It’s not entirely clear when retailers plan to restock, but we can expect most of them to do so before Christmas.

Some stores, such as Smyths Toys, have published vague timings as to when they expect to open up sales again.

Others have maintained radio silence to avoid a mad rush when stock returns.

Below are links and some dates for PS5 restocks in the UK.

Due to high demand and the coronavirus restrictions, most retailers are only selling the consoles through their websites.

  • Amazon – sold out, no restock date given
  • Studio – sold out, no restock date given
  • Argos – sold out, no restock date given
  • GAME – sold out, no restock date given
  • Currys PC World – sold out, no restock date given
  • Smyths Toys – sold out, new stock available “December 2020”
  • John Lewis – sold out, no restock date given
  • Very – £449 sold out, stock “coming soon”

The PS5 is Sony’s latest and greatest gaming console.

It’s the successor to the PS4 and PS4 Pro, and is available in two distinct versions.

Those are the pricey PS5 proper with all the bells and whistles, and the digital edition, which is cheaper but with no disc tray.

Both consoles are out November 2020 with an impressive roster of launch games.

And they’re going head-to-head with Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, the  Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Like Sony, Microsoft has opted to launch two machines: A full-works console with a higher price tag and a cheaper one without a disc tray.

When is the PS5 out and how much does it cost?

The PlayStation 5 starts at just under £450 in the UK and $500 in the US

The PS5 release date landed on November 12, but not everywhere.

That only stood for the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.

In the UK, gamers weren’t able to get it until November 19.

The PS5 proper costs £449.99/$499.99, while the digital edition comes in at $399/£359.

So how does that compare to the PS5’s biggest rival, the Xbox Series X?

Microsoft’s pair of next-gen consoles came out a little earlier, landing on November 10.

The cheaper disc-free Xbox Series S costs £249/$299, while the Xbox Series X comes in at £449/$499.

All prices were correct at the time of writing, but may have since changed. Always do your own research before making any purchase.

n other news, The Sun’s favourite alternative to a games console is the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.

Grab a VR headset and you’ll be able to play the legendary Beat Saber – like Guitar Hero, but with lightsabers.

And Dell’s Alienware R10 Ryzen Edition is a gaming PC powerhouse that crushes both the new consoles.
