Fenwick announced they would be shutting their central London shop on Facebook to the dismay of many shoppers.

Many shoppers and ex-employees are mourning the loss of another giant store closing its doors this year.

One person said: “So sad.”

Another added: “I worked there 23 years ago I worked there for a very long time and worked on most floors with some amazing people unfortunately we didn’t stay in touch as there wasn’t Facebook or anything like that goodbye Bond Street it was great.

And another user wrote: “What’s happening London.

“All the wonderful stores closing down and now Fenwick.”

Rosie Grant, 62, a costume designer said she visited the store to give it “one final, sad, farewell”.

“I’m actually devastated that it’s closing,” she told The Guardian.

“It just has an elegance to it that you don’t get in other shops.

“It’s more understated, it’s classic; it has things you actually need.”

Fenwick started trading in 1882, opening its store on Bond Street in 1891.

The store went up for sale in 2022 and was sold for over £400million to Lazari Investments, a property development firm founded by the late Cyprus-born British billionaire Chris Lazari.

Parts of the store will be used temporarily for charity pop-ups.

From February 9, five charities will inhabit the former handbag and accessories section.

The new multi-charity shop will open for a fortnight and will host a variety of events with DJs on the weekends.

It comes after major retailers including Boots and Costa announced they will close their stores this month.
