Cancellations account for three-quarters of all wedding insurance claims — but cover does not protect against cases where a bride or groom backs out of the big day due to cold feet.
Only around a quarter of couples take out wedding insurance against something going wrong with the ceremony, such as a venue cancelling or going bust.
Other areas that wedding insurance covers are if a florist or caterer fail to turn up, or if there are problems with the bridal attire, transport, cake or booked photographer.
It should also pay up if the bride or groom cannot attend due to serious illness or injury, or dies before the big day.
But cover will rarely include cancellation due to Covid-19.

About 20 per cent of couples call off their wedding. Yet the insurance will not cover against matters of the heart — only practical details that relate to costs for the big day.
Karen McCullough, of specialist insurer CoverMyWedding, says: ‘Wedding insurance offers financial protection against a range of mishaps, such as the venue cancelling, failures of suppliers, or the theft or loss of wedding rings and gifts.
But it does not include “disinclination” to marry as you can’t insure for cold feet, or being jilted at the altar.’
Standard policies are also unlikely to cover against bad weather spoiling the occasion, or you having to cancel because you have lost your job.
Any marquee put up on your own land is also unlikely to be covered against damage or injury.
