Nigel Frater couldn’t wait any longer after licking his lips at the thought of his favourite sarnie – a Tesco’s Pigs in Blankets bap – and decided to pop to Tesco to cop one.

He was joined by his wife, Rebecca, 54, and they shot to their local branch in Ingleby Barwick, Stockton, to bag the meaty treat, reports TeessideLive.

When they got there – and scanned the store’s sarnie selection with great care – Rebecca spotted some Jolly 7s National Lottery Scratchcards and bought a few to take home and dish out to the family for a bit of added fun to the day.

Rebecca, said: “It always adds a bit of extra excitement and anticipation and it’s a lot of fun watching everyone scratching their Scratchcards.

“We agreed at the start of dinner that we would all scratch them at the same time and if anyone won we would share the prize.”

After scratching through six of the cards they had won a grand total of £6 – and thought that was the end of their luck.

My son thought it was just a trick – but I knew it had to be true

But the very last scratchcard to be chiseled off fell to the hands of Rebecca’s mother-in-law, Kathleen, 76.

Thomas Warrington, 28, the couple’s son, his girlfriend Chloe Mennell, 30, Isaac Frater, 21, the couple’s son, Rebecca’s sister, Angela Lathan, 62, and Kathleen could not believe what the scratchcard showed them.

Rebecca, continued: “Finally, as my mother-in-law scratched her Scratchcard, she just had a look of total confusion on her face.

“She said,‘I don’t understand this, I have a seven? What does it mean?’ We very quickly realised that this meant we had won the top prize.

I scooped £66k on Postcode Lottery but don’t even LIVE there – small decision paid off & my dream has come true

“My son thought it was just a trick – but I knew it had to be true, the whole moment, when I think back now, was just quite surreal.”

Knowing they had just scooped the top prize – £100,000 – they ran to the shop as quickly as they could to confirm the win, and jumped for joy when they heard the “noise” every lotto player wants to hear when giving in their scratchcards.

COCKTAILS ALL ROUND

After realising they won the prize they all started planning how to celebrate the win, and Rebecca’s daughter-in-law Chloe – who “doesn’t drink” – wanted to mark the occasion with a cocktail.

Rebecca said it was “champagne and cocktails all round” when they started celebrating – and mentioned the win was down to her hungry hubby’s sandwich craving.

She explained: “We don’t normally go to Tesco but Nigel had spotted their special Pigs in Blanket sandwich and really wanted to try it.

“The Jolly 7s Scratchcard caught my eye so I bought a selection of these for the Christmas dinner table.

“If we hadn’t gone to Tesco for a festive sarnie on that day we wouldn’t have bought the Scratchcards and we certainly wouldn’t be celebrating being £100k winners today.”

Already thinking about what to buy, Rebecca said she has her eye on a Mulberry bag she saw in New York – where she had recently visitted.

And Hubby Nigel copped a top-of-the-range set of bowls.

OTHER WINNERS

Rebecca is not the only person who has caught a bit of financial luck in recent months, as this woman netted a cool £86K from a lottery ticket she found during a cleanup of her home.

And less than a week ago a retired foster mum pocketed £83K on the People’s Postcode Lottery,
