BABY, it’s cold outside. With plummeting temperatures and skyrocketing bills, there’s other ways to keep warm this winter: Wearing your heat.

John Lewis says hooded blankets are among its best sellers this season.

The Ony, £38.99: 5/5

Ony has a range of bold colours for its hooded blankets which make this stylish enough to take the kids to school in or wear for a trip to the shops.

And to top it off it kept me warmer than I ever thought I’d be.

It’s super-thick, fleecy layers are surprisingly lightweight and against my arms, it felt silky.

There’s no need to turn the heating on with this at home – unless you want to pretend you are in a sauna.

Loungeable Dark Brown Spot Oversized Blanket Hoodie, New Look, £28: 4/5

This is the longest of the options but unfortunately it comes without sleeves. It felt silky smooth against my skin and didn’t cover my clothes with fluff.

While it did make me a bit warmer, and my cat was happy to sit on it, my arms were left feeling the cold.

This blanket is definitely the most acceptable to take the kids to school in

That was easily rectified by tucking them in and the lack of sleeves made it practical to cook in.

While it’s not the warmest, it’s definitely the most acceptable to take the kids to school in – and big enough to fit them in too so they won’t get cold.

Teddy Fleece Adults’ Hooded Blanket, M&S, £25.00: 3.5/5

This was the most blanket-like and was the trendiest by a country mile.

I’ll be going out around town in it as it felt stylish and it kept my torso warm.

Wearing it made my top half warmer than when the heating is on

Much shorter than the rest which means my legs were chilly when standing.

Popping up the hood also helps. Wearing it made my top half warmer than when the heating is on. It also passed the cat test, with my ginger tom jumping right up.

Brown Giraffe Blanket Hoodie, New Look, £24.99: 1/5

Getting this one on and in the right direction was a workout in itself and I don’t know if that or the blanket made me feel warm.

It’s not thick fleece and my arms were pinned down to my side, making it tricky to do anything while wearing it.

This blanket is cute to look at but it’s not practical

Cute to look at but it’s not practical – something I’d wanted a hooded blanket to be. Forgot to turn your heating off if you buy this one.

I wouldn’t be seen dead outside in this one.

Green Sausage Dog Fleece Oversized Blanket Hoodie, New Look, £29.99: 2/5

Looks great and felt nice and silky but in terms of warmth, it wasn’t great to start with.

I started to feel comfortable after about half an hour wearing it but I wasn’t boiling. If the mercury drops below zero, you’d still need heating even with this on.

It’s comfy and the hood was nice and loose which is great.

With a bold pattern you can look stylish nipping out to put the bins out but I wouldn’t spend longer than that in the cold air.
