FROM crumpets with creepy faces to cheesecakes topped with spooky eyes, there are plenty of hair-raising treats lining the supermarket shelves ahead of Halloween.
Whether it is gory goodies or supernatural nibbles you’re after you will be spoilt for choice in the run-up to October 31.

GHOST CRUMPETS

ALDI has launched these spooky- looking ghost crumpets just in time for Halloween.
They are perfect for when you’re after a scary snack or want to dish up a spooky breakfast for the children.
And they’re super-cheap, too, at just £1.09 for six.
They went down a treat toasted and slathered in butter for the children’s breakfast.
I have no doubt we will be buying them again before October 31.

THREE chocolate-flavour cakes with chocolate frosting and a dog decoration plus three vanilla flavour sponges with orange and green frosting and sugar sprinkles.
My only issue with these is that the chocolate dog variety taste lovely, but they are not very spooky at all – it’s just a cute little dog.
All the cupcakes were tasty though, and at just £4 for six, I thought they were very good value.

THIS impressive Monster Celebration cake from M&S is a real showstopper if you are planning a Halloween party this year.
Made with Madeira sponge, strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream, it had a lovely flavour – and while sweet, it wasn’t too sickly.
It’s pricey but is a good size so you won’t need to spend too much more on other bits to get your table looking just fright.
All in all, a terrifyingly good centre piece.

A LOVELY moist flapjack with a nice toffee flavour.
They are very small so it’s nice if you fancy something sweet but not too big.
Not bad for the price. I would like a few more in the pack to make them better value for money.

HALLOWEEN MALLOW CAKES

I WAS expecting a biscuit base similar to the one you’d find on a regular teacake, but these offerings from Lidl had a thin wafer base and it wasn’t as nice.
The mallow was purple, which made them look more spooky, and they had a higher dome shape.
Nothing much to complain about, although personally I preferred the more traditional variety.

BONFIRE BANGERS & LAVA ROLLS

THE M&S lava rolls (ocado.com) are great if you want to really up the Halloween vibes!
They were soft and delicious and the bangers tasted very meaty and were perfectly seasoned.
They are a little pricier than your average M&S pork sausage – by about 75p – so were they really worth it?
For a kids’ party, any old sausage will do, but if you are entertaining food-loving adults then they will definitely appreciate the flavour and seasoning.

SPOOKY SLIDERS

FOUR mini beefburgers from M&S, with cheddar and onion encased in pumpkin-shaped puff pastry.
These looked fab and the pumpkin pastry did not disappoint – it was delicious.
I found them a bit greasy when cooked, but the kids loved them and they looked really impressive for some spooky party food.
They were filling, too.

THESE Aldi snacks work out at just 42p a cake so they’re a bargain if you are planning a big party and don’t want to bake.
The sponge was a little drier than I had hoped for, but the toppings were nice and the kids didn’t complain.

THIS vanilla-flavoured Asda cheesecake draped in a red raspberry glaze and sitting on a digestive biscuit base is decorated with five edible eyeballs.
I found the eyeballs tasty, but a bit off-putting to be honest.
The cheesecake itself was a little dry.
You could also buy a standard New York cheesecake from Asda for just £2 and add your own decorations.
Not my favourite taste-wise, but it got lots of comments when I brought it out.
A perfect Halloween pudding.

SPICED LATTE PUMPKIN CAKE

A SPICED pumpkin sponge cake filled with coffee buttercream and a coffee soak.
The Tesco Finest treat is topped with a sweet frosting and decorated with cinnamon dusting.
It doesn’t need to be Halloween for you to enjoy this – it was a lovely warming cake for any chilly autumn day and perfect for when you want to sit down with a hot drink and a slice as a treat.
A good price, too. Just yummy.

BALLARD’S CANDY APPLES

THESE look really impressive but they are mega-expensive for what is essentially no more than an apple dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with a few hundreds and thousands or marshmallows.
The kids’ eyes lit up when they saw them, plus they get one of their five-a-day with this Halloween treat by Lidl.
The only downside is the price.
You can buy similar ones in Sainsbury’s for 90p, but why not make your own with the kids for a fraction of the price?

PATCH THE PUMPKIN CAKE

A TAKE on the hit caterpillar cake sold at most supermarkets but with spooky twists including fondant pumpkins and skulls.
The Morrisons sponge is filled with chocolate-flavoured buttercream and covered in a delicious, smooth, milk choc.
I wasn’t a fan of the toppings scattered on top – they detracted from the main event – but it did look spooky for Halloween and the filling and sponge itself were delicious.
It’s also great value compared to similar cakes at other stores.
