THEY’RE naughty but ice – and there’s nothing sweeter than a chocolate-covered ice cream.

But if a Magnum usually makes your day, you could be missing out on some big savings – as it is more than double the price of many supermarket own-brands.

We gave mum-of-three Lynsey Hope the go ahead for the tough assignment of putting the Magnum and some supermarket lickalikey rivals to the taste test. Here are her findings with marks out of ten for taste, value and an overall score.

LIDL GELATELLI MINT ICE CREAMS (£1.79 for 6 or 29.8p each)

These dupes of the mint-flavoured Magnum cost less than 30p each

These dupes of the mint-flavoured Magnum cost less than 30p each

GOOD news for Lidl shoppers. Its own-brand ice creams are some of the tastiest you can buy – and the cheapest.

I loved these dupes of the mint-flavoured Magnum and cost less than 30p each. The mint flavour was subtle but delicious, the chocolate was nicely thick and the ice cream perfectly creamy.

I tried microwave noodles - you'll never believe which one was my favourite!
I tried own brand teabags and a supermarket version beat PG Tips and Tetley

TESCO MILK CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM (£1.20 for 3 or 40p each)

This Tesco offering was probably my least favourite

This Tesco offering was probably my least favourite

A GREAT price from Tesco and absolutely nothing not to like – but I wasn’t overwhelmed.

The chocolate was quite thin and the vanilla ice cream wasn’t as creamy as others.

I found it a little tasteless and disappointing. Probably my least favourite.

MORRISONS AMOUR CLASSIC ICE CREAM (£1.29 or 43p each)

These are a great value option from Morrisons

These are a great value option from Morrisons

THESE look almost identical to the Magnum Classic and are a good price. Again, the chocolate wasn’t quite as thick but it was smooth and tasty and the ice cream had a lovely hint of vanilla.

A great value option from Morrisons. I’d buy these again. The kids didn’t even notice the difference.

ALDI GIANNI’S CARAMEL MILLIONAIRE (£1.99 for 3 or 66.3p each)

This Aldi option is a cheaper copy of the Magnum Double Gold Caramel Billionaire Ice Cream

This Aldi option is a cheaper copy of the Magnum Double Gold Caramel Billionaire Ice Cream

QUITE pricey compared to the basic milk chocolate version, but these were delicious.

They’re a cheaper copy of the Magnum Double Gold Caramel Billionaire Ice Cream (£1.33 each). And with 216 calories and 19.5g sugar, they’re still slightly better for you than a Magnum.

These M&S ice creams were disappointingly quite basic

M&S ice creams were disappointingly quite basic.

The Chocolate Sticks had a nice vanilla ice cream and a smooth milk chocolate coating, which had a lovely crunch as it melted into your mouth with the ice cream.

But there are better and cheaper options available elsewhere.

MAGNUM CLASSIC (£3.50 for 4 or 87.5p each)

Magnum Classics are delicious but pricey

Magnum Classics are delicious but pricey

YOU can’t go wrong with a Magnum Classic, it tasted delicious. But they are pricey – buying Sainsbury’s version instead will save 50p per ice cream.

Those savings will add up over the summer, especially if you have a big family and kids who love an ice cream on a hot day.

MY daughter Olive, five, especially loves a white Magnum but these are a great alternative and much cheaper than the branded version.

I gave her one after school and she didn’t spot the difference. The white chocolate was quite sweet but the ice cream had a smooth and creamy texture. I’d definitely buy more.

THESE are a real winner. The chocolate isn’t quite as luxurious as the Magnum Classic, but it has a lovely smooth flavour and isn’t too rich.

The ice cream is soft and creamy with a lovely hint of vanilla. They’re not the cheapest, I will be stocking up on these for the summer. No more Magnums for me.
