Tips for cutting costs on heating

Llewellyn Kinch, from MakeMyHouseGreen, has provided the perfect solutions to help conscious customers save money and remain warm this winter.

The first of those is to lower your thermostat when you’re sleeping or away – a decrease of just a few degrees can lead to significant savings on you energy bill.

Sealing gaps around windows and doors, especially in older homes that are notorious for drafts that let out the heat, is another solution.

Llewellyn said: “Install weather stripping or draft stoppers to keep the warmth in and the cold out. Using rolled up towels is a free-alternative.”

The experts third piece of advice is to install thermal curtains.

“These specially designed curtains help retain indoor heat, reducing the reliance on heating systems,” Llewellyn explained.

“When the sun is shining, keep them open to let in the natural sunlight, but keep those curtains shut when the window isn’t getting sun to keep the heat in.

“Curtains over drafty doors can also work well. And making sure they’re not covering a radiator when shut, or that heat is wasted on the cold glass.”

Llewellyn also claims that taking regular meter readings and submitting them to your energy supplier can help save the pennies.
