Wi-Fi boosters, referred to as Intelligent Wi-Fi Pods by Virgin Media, are essentially plug-in mini routers.

They take the wireless signal from your main router and spit it out into further flung corners of the home.

They are included free in packages a trio of Virgin Media packages, including the Gig1, Volt, Ultimate Volt deals.

Although customers should note that they must have a Hub 3, Hub 4 or Hub 5 in order for the booster to work.

If you’re not part of these select packages, Virgin also offers the broadband boosters for an additional £5 a month.

There is unfortunately no one-off fee for those who don’t get it free alongside their package.

If you want to buy a Wi-Fi booster outright, instead of a monthly Virgin Media rental, then there are plenty to choose from online.

PRO TIPS

Director of Connectivity at Virgin Media, Gareth Lister, has previously revealed some pro tips for Wi-Fi boosters to The Sun.

“Similar to a mobile phone or a hub, avoid putting your pod in direct sunlight,” according to Lister.

This means avoiding window sills, especially during the warmer months.

Leaving any bit of tech in the sun puts it at risk of overheating, but especially Wi-Fi routers and boosters which are always switched on.

You should also deter any pets – namely cats – who fancy using the booster as a cosy seat.

Overheating can slow down the efficiency of the device, reduce the speed of Wi-Fi and in the worst cases, stop extending your connection altogether.
