JOHN Lewis shoppers have been left divided after the retailer unveiled its festive ad – with some saying “Christmas is ruined”.

The supermarket chain is known for its emotional festive ads, but this year’s is a little different.

The clip tells the story of a little boy’s quest for the perfect Christmas tree, befriending a playful character along the way.

Eight-year-old Alfie picks up a seed from a flea market, with the fast-growing Snapper and wannabe Christmas tree growing its own personality.

But when the Snapper grows so big he tears through Christmas decorations it is banished to the garden outside leaving Alfie devastated.

All is not lost though as the advert closes with the Snapper embraced outside with gifts and invited back inside to family life.

As is usually the case with John Lewis ads, many shoppers have been left emotional.

One shopper said: “Loved it brought a little tear to my eyes well done John Lewis.”

Meanwhile, a second said: “Love it definitely brings a smile and tear to your eyes.”

A third added: “Love it definitely brings a smile to your face after a really rubbish year.”

But some viewers blasted the ad saying that it hadn’t quite hit the mark this year.

Writing on Twitter, formerly known as X, one said: “Lost for words here. That’s genuinely terrible. #ChristmasRuined.”

While another said: “Are they all having a competition this year who can make the worst advert?”

Plus, a particularly angry viewer said: “I usually love the John Lewis Christmas Ads but this is rubbish.”

It’s not the first time a John Lewis Christmas ad has had viewers reaching for the tissues.

Fans were left emotional when the retailer released its festive advert last year.

The 90-second clip is about a foster dad’s painful progress in learning to skateboard all to make teenage girl Ellie feel welcome in his home.

The ad prompted a wave of reaction from customers.

One Twitter user said: “Well the John Lewis Christmas advert has got me good and proper.”

Another added: “I may or may not have cried watching this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert.”

While a third said: Love the John Lewis Christmas ad! Beautiful tearjerker.”

It comes after a number of other retailers released their ads, including Asda, Aldi and Morrisons.
