VEGANS can now scoff chicken-style wings featuring a fake bone.
A sugarcane spear means the jackfruit wings can be picked up and eaten.
Plant-based street food brand Biff’s Plant Shack boasts: “We’re changing the definition of ‘boneless’ for the better.”
Crispy Fried Jackfruit Wingz, made from jackfruit, mushrooms, carrots, herbs and spices, are part of a new street food range in Waitrose stores this week.
The vegan “bones” are made from cut sugarcane spears, on which the jackfruit is formed and then coated in a crispy breadcrumb mixture.
When cooked, jackfruit resembles shredded chicken or pork, and is used in many meat imitation products.
Company boss Biff Bloom-Burrows said: “We want to make a product that’s not only better for the planet, but can show people that even the elements of meat that seem so intrinsic to animals can be bettered in both taste, experience and impact.
“Billions of chicken wings are eaten every year.
“There is a huge appetite for a vegan alternative that can replicate the real thing and to make even a small dent in that figure would create a big change.”
Biff and partner Christa set up the plant shack in 2017.
