US ambassador and parents of Gershkovich, held on espionage charges widely viewed as spurious, attend hearing in Moscow

Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter being held on espionage charges in Russia, appeared in a courtroom on Thursday in a rare public appearance to appeal against his pre-trial detention for a further two months.

Gershkovich appeared slightly pale and with longer hair after almost three months’ detention in Lefortovo prison in Moscow, which is reserved for targets of FSB investigations. He was smiling in some photos.
