SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has recalled a popular peanut butter product after fears if could be contaminated with salmonella.

The Jif Creamy Peanut Butter and Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter have been recalled after distributors believed they could have come into contact with salmonella.

Salmonella can cause severe food poisoning, and symptoms include fever, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps.

Symptoms can flare up within a few hours of eating the contaminated product but in some cases it can take a few weeks for illness to begin, according to the NHS.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published an alert on its website issuing a warning to customers on May 27.

Affected bars have a best before date of 09 December 2023, and 23 October 2023.

You can also look out for batch codes 1343006 and 1296425 to identify the affected jars.

Customers are advised to not eat the jars, and to return them to the store they were bought from for a full refund.
