Sara Khan said the government had ‘left a vacuum’ by failing to engage Muslim communities with the anti-radicalisation programme

The counter-terrorism Prevent programme, which has been dogged by claims of being a cover to spy on Muslim communities, is “no longer fit for purpose” and should be “ideologically blind”, a government adviser has said.

The controversial strategy is currently the subject of a review by Sir William Shawcross, with leaks suggesting it will conclude that Prevent has been too focused on rightwing extremism in recent years. Instead, there should be a renewed focus on Islamist extremism, prompting accusations that the findings were politically motivated, the leaks show.
