Whether we like to admit it or not, most Brits love nothing more than belting out a great track while driving down the motorway. 

While the choice of song is purely down to taste, there are some favourites that we Brits just can’t help but sing along to.

Research by Direct Line Essentials Insurance has revealed the UK’s top 30 essential driving anthems, featuring bops from Fleetwood Mac to Whitney Houston.

The study found that found over half of us have a dedicated playlist for road trips, each containing an average of 51 songs. 

A massive 89% of people confessed that when on their own in the car, they love belting their favourite song at the top of their voice, with 39% going so far as to say they have a great singing voice.

It also revealed that partners (41%), children (34%), best friends (22%) and pets (10%) are the best companions to sing along with in the car.

Britain really is a nation of driving lovers with two thirds of us disclosing that being behind the wheel is one of their favourite places to be.

However, the song that came out on top by a long way as the greatest driving song of all time, was Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ with 39% of Brits saying the 1979 hit is an essential part of any road trip.

In second place is ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ by Bon Jovi which was just behind at 33%.

Other feel-good classic anthems that made it to the top five include ‘Summer of ’69’ by Bryan Adams with 32% and ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ with 29%.

‘I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)’ rounds off the top five, followed by The Eagles’ Hotel California with 28% and ‘Go Your Own Way’ by Fleetwood Mac at 26%.

Even though the list was dominated with old school tunes, there was still space for some newer songs such as Ed Sheeran’s 2017 hit ‘Castle on the hill’ which is found in 20% of driving playlists. 

Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 is in 18% and 2008’s Sex On Fire by Kings of Leon made it to 24% of Brits list of driving anthems.

It also highlighted that a nation, we love to drive – 80% of people who took the survey think there is nothing better than heading off on a family road trip, with 87% agreeing that the UK is one of the best places to head out on the open road.
