UK holidaymakers who pay for TV streaming services can no longer stream live sport when visiting Europe now the Brexit transition is complete.

Sky, Amazon Prime and BT customers are now unable to watch live games, such as the Premier League, as the UK no longer has access under the EU Portability Regulations.

These rules allows consumers across the European Economic Area to access their online content services, for example, Netflix and Amazon Prime, as if they are at home when they travel within the EEA.

However, now the UK has left the EU, its regulation has been revoked.

The same rules will also now apply to customers from EU member state countries when travelling to the UK.

This will also affect other programmes and services that UK citizens can access when in Europe.

Amazon Prime said UK customers can still access the ‘watch abroad’ category which includes select titles that are available globally, as well as Amazon Originals like The Grand Tour, The Boys and any movies and TV shows they have purchased.

It added that many more select titles are also available to download to a customer’s device to watch offline when travelling in the EU and worldwide.

Customers who now live permanently outside of the UK but have a UK Prime or Prime Video membership, can update their home location and access the TV shows and movies available in that locale.

Some Sky apps, for example Sky Go, will allow customers to download shows and movies before they leave home to watch offline while abroad.

However, they will still no longer be able to stream films or shows, or watch live sport.

Meanwhile, BT TV and BT Sport customers will not be able to use the apps or web players in the EU, including all live and catch-up services.

Netflix customers can only use their accounts to watch programmes and films that the company is licensed to show in the country they are visiting.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch, said: ‘One outcome of Brexit was that Britain left the Digital Single Market, meaning that consumers lost access to their UK-based content when travelling abroad.

‘Sky customers in Spain are among those who have discovered this unwanted outcome in the past few days.

‘”Streaming services” licensing agreements are sold by territory, so if your destination is not covered, your favourite shows and films will not be available.

‘If you’re travelling abroad, make sure you download your TV shows and films to your device, which should keep them available to view offline for 30 days on most platforms.

‘For some streaming services like Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime most of their original output is available wherever you are in the world, conversely, all of the content on BritBox is inaccessible overseas.

‘If you are moving abroad for the long-term, you may be able to talk to your provider and have your home territory permanently relocated, preventing nasty surprises when travelling.’
