Oliver Dowden hints at further regulation of tech firms after meeting with comms chief Nick Clegg

The culture secretary has said Facebook’s decision to ban Australian users from accessing news during the global pandemic was concerning and implied the social media giant was “putting its bottom line above the public interest”.

Oliver Dowden suggested he was minded to pursue tougher regulation after a meeting on Thursday night with Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice-president for communications and former Liberal Democrat deputy prime minister.
