Twitter has confirmed an outage to The Sun – but says it’s now fixed.

“Some people in Europe experienced issues Tweeting due to an external access issue,” a Twitter spokesperson told us.

“This issue has since been resolved.”

Most of the complaints suggest that the website and app wouldn’t load.

The issue appeared to be hitting UK users mostly, but several hundred people in the US also complained about the app.

Thousands of complaints rushed in at just after 1pm London time / 8am New York time.

But Twitter was still working for some users, so it wasn’t a universal outage.

The majority of complaints are centred on the website, but some reported issues with the app too.

One Down Detector user wrote: “Twitter website is not loading on my phone, all other sites fine on my phone.”

Another said: “Seems down in the UK for me.”

Twitter is one of the world’s biggest social media sites.

It launched to the public way back in July 2006, and has since become a global cultural phenomenon.

More than 330million people use the app every month.

And the company generated an impressive $3.72billion in revenue last year.

But the app is still eclipsed by the likes of Facebook, which has 2.91billion monthly active users.

It’s unclear what has caused today’s Twitter outage.

The issues could be linked to a bungled update, problems with a server, or some kind of planned maintenance.
