The independent retailer, described as a “real treasure”, will shut after its owner, Jeff Vane, said he was planning to retire.

In a recent post on the bakery’s Facebook page, he said: “It’s time to tell you that Vanes the family bakers will start to wind down to an eventual close in the coming months.

“Vanes the Bakers has had four generations of family bakers and been in business for more than 90 years.”

He added: “This has been a very big decision taken over a period of time, but as I approach retirement age and find myself in the new role of granddad, I feel it is time to start winding down the business to an eventual close.”

Another said: ” Best biscuits ever! All the best for your retirement.”

Meanwhile, a third added: “I will miss you so much. Who will make my spicy hot cross buns without fruit?

It comes after a number of other retailers across the UK close branches.

Wilko has already closed hundreds of stores over the last two months, with all 400 earmarked to shut by early October.

It comes after the retailer crashed into administration on August 10.

Meanwhile, Paperchase closed all its stores for good in spring after going bust in February.

M&Co closed all its branches by the end of April after it too fell into administration earlier this year. It has since relaunched online though.

A number of retailers have been closing standalone branches too, including Iceland and Boots.

But it’s not all bad news – a number of retailers have been expanding and opening branches across the UK.

PoundlandPrimark and B&M have all announced store openings while a number of bakery chains are set to open branches.
