APPLE is secretly working on a virtual reality headset, insiders have claimed.

The surprise product could be in stores as early as 2022 – with a seriously high price tag.

For years, Apple has shown an interest in augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR).

But this has largely been limited to fun iPhone and iPad apps, or VR accessories that work with Apple products.

Now Bloomberg reports that Apple is nearly ready to launch its own VR headset.

The device is expected to be totally wireless and run on batteries – like Facebook’s smash-hit Oculus Quest 2 headset.

Unlike AR, virtual reality replaces the entirety of a user’s view.

The report says that the Apple VR headset swill include an “all-encompassing 3D digital environment for gaming, watching video and communicating”.

It’s expected that the headset will feature powerful chips, and very high-resolution displays.

And there’s even a fan too, to allow for boosted performance without causing heat issues.

Bloomberg says the headset is currently codenamed N301, in a “late prototype” stage, and isn’t a guaranteed launch.

The headset is tipped to feature a swanky fabric exterior to keep weight down, as well as cameras on the exterior for hand-tracking.

Sadly, the headset could be very expensive.

Insiders say it’ll be far pricier than rival headsets, which usually cost between £300 and £900.

And they say the company could sell as few as a single headset per store per day – or just under 200,000 units annually.

Of course, Apple hasn’t made an official announcement about releasing a VR headset.

And even if Apple is working on one, it’s entirely possible that the project could be scrapped before launch.

In other news, The Sun’s favourite alternative to a games console is the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.

Grab a VR headset and you’ll be able to play the legendary Beat Saber – like Guitar Hero, but with lightsabers.

And Dell’s Alienware R10 Ryzen Edition is a gaming PC powerhouse that crushes both the new consoles.
