APPLE is supposedly working on a top-secret headset – and it could be out very soon.
The ultra-confidential gadget hasn’t been officially confirmed, but plenty of insiders say it’s nearly ready.
What is the Apple headset?
Most of tech’s biggest names have already released some kind of headset.
It could be virtual reality (a completely computer-generated space), or augmented reality where graphics are overlaid on the world around you.
We’ve seen products from Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Facebook – but nothing from Apple yet.
But behind closed doors, Apple is said to have hundreds of staff working on VR and AR projects.
The latest rumours suggest that we’ll see two different headsets.
The first is expected to land next year that should look like a regular headset.
This is likely to be a pair of mixed-reality goggles that offer both VR and AR.

Then we’re expected a more svelte pair of AR glasses down the line – although the release is uncertain.
The first headset is tipped to be similar to existing VR headsets, albeit with a smaller and more lightweight design.
We’re expecting high-density displays, hand-tracking, spatial audio and a new realityOS operating system.
It’s said to support its own special App Store, although it’s not clear what content will be available on it.
Apple headset release date and price
Sadly there’s no definitive answer when it comes to an Apple headset release date and price.
We’ve heard plenty of leaks and rumours, but nothing official from Apple.
It’s expected that the first headset will come out in 2023, with a possible announcement early on in the year.
And rumour has it we’ll see pricing north in the $2,000 to $2,300 region.
That’s significantly higher than most rival products on the market today.
For instance, Facebook’s entry-level Meta Quest 2 starts at just $399 (but until recently, $299).
It’s unclear how much the second headset will cost.
In any case, all of these details are still based on leaks.
Even if they are true right now, Apple’s plans could change at any point.
We won’t know the truth until Apple chief Tim Cook gets on stage and unveils a headset.
