Hits: Universal controls a third of the world’s songs, including tracks by Olivia Rodrigo (pictured)
TikTok users can again share songs from artists including Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande after resolving a row with Universal.
The world’s biggest record label said Chinese-owned TikTok did not offer a fair deal, and in February pulled millions of songs from the video-sharing app in a row over payments and use of music made by artificial intelligence.
Universal had said TikTok paid its songwriters and artists ‘a fraction’ of what other social media firms did to stream its music.
But yesterday the companies said they were working ‘expeditiously’ to get songs back on the app.
And they will work together to ensure developments in AI ‘will protect human artistry and the economics that flow to those artists’ as musicians become increasingly irate at AI-developed songs going viral.
