BARGAIN hunters can snap up returned goods from top brands at knockdown prices – if they are willing to take a gamble.

John Lewis, Amazon and Argos are among big names that resell pallets of items sent back by customers.

But as you won’t know what you are getting in advance, here are some tips on getting the best haul.

RETURNS: When shoppers send goods back to stores, many retailers group them together and sell them on as bundles with a huge discount.

It is not uncommon to pick up these pallets for ten per cent or less of their retail value.

Items could have been brought back because a shopper simply changed their mind, or there is a fault.

That means you cannot be sure of their condition until they arrive, and you buy on a strict “no returns” basis.

If you receive damaged goods, you will have to repair them — or write them off.

MAKE A BID: Pallets are offered across the country, and you can shop for anything from clothes and beauty items to electricals and toys.

Most are sold by auction houses, so you may have to compete with other bidders.

START SMALL: Prices can begin at less than £20 and rise into the hundreds.

If you are thinking of buying a pallet for the first time, it is a good idea to pay only as much as you are willing to lose.

After all, everything in the box could be practically worthless.

Look for your favourite labels to stand a better chance of getting something you want or need.

Different big-name brands work with different auction houses.

For example, Amazon items are often sold through B-Stock, whereas John Lewis can be found on i-bidder and John Pye.

You should also look for items that are based near you, so you do not have to worry about big delivery costs.
